Mesa
was founded by Mormon missionaries more than 119
years ago. Since that time it has become the 3rd
largest city in Arizona with a population of 422,000.
Mesa attracts families seeking an alternative to the
complexities of many American cities with the feeling
that it is a good place to raise a family. Mesa
also attracts senior citizens, "snowbirds",
and those seeking to escape the weather of colder U.S.
locales during the winter months. Affordability
is a contributing factor in Mesa's continuing growth.
The median home price in Mesa is about $90,000 and there
is no city property tax. Housing options include
modern apartment complexes, traditional and Spanish-influenced
single-family homes and expansive retirement communities.
Mesa
has a well respected school system. The Mesa Public
School District educates more than 69,000 students each
year creating a strong work ethic in its students and
fostering high levels of productivity and customer service,
making Mesa an attractive place for business and industry.
Mesa
attracts many businesses with no inventory, franchise
or off-shore unitary taxes. Fortune 500 companies
with a presence in Mesa include Boeing, Motorola,
AT&T, TRW Vehicle Safety Systems and General Motors
proving ground. Thompson Newspapers and the Phoenix
Newspapers, health care and government are also major
employers. Mesa retailing draws in excess of 650,000
people with two regional-size shopping malls and dozens
of other shopping areas throughout Mesa neighborhoods.
Mesa
has more than 20 golf courses and 47 city parks within
the 123-square-mile city limits. Only an hour's
drive east of the city are four popular lakes for fishing
and boating.
